Includes references to a portrait of their ‘Aunt May’ and a family story about Walter Osborne (Fr Gwynn’s godfather): ‘He was apparently rather dominated by a powerful mother but there was an understanding that he would marry Aunt Lucy. However before the understanding could become an engagement he caught a bad cold, and died of pneumonia’ (8 February 1982, 4pp).

Remarks that her mother is quite upset about the publication 'I think mother has worked herself to the state where she does not know if she wishes the book to be met with success or with failure.'

Letter from Ellen Russell, Tadworth Court, Tadworth, Surrey, England to her sister, Rosa [Mulholland] concerning a book about her late husband Lord Russell of Killowen. Remarks how much she dislikes it '...it is only a hasty impressionist sketch roughly and crudely done. In some parts it is clever no doubt the parts where Mr Barry O'Brien is well to the front and indeed one troubles to think what Sir Charles Russell would have done without him. It was he who was the author of the Parnell speech, that is clear-conceited little owl!'

Holograph letters by Fr Willie Doyle SJ from his time with the 8th Battalion, Royal Irish Fusiliers, 49th Brigade, 16th Division and the 8th Battalion, Royal Dublin Fusilier’s: at Whitely Camp, Surrey; Bordon Camp, Hampshire; various locations in France. In the main, the letters are addressed to his father, but also his sister Mai. The letters document his time as a military chaplain, firstly at camp in England while preparing for embarkation and secondly, at the front in France. Includes notebooks written by Fr Willie Doyle SJ at the front (31 March 1916 - August 1917) with the following titles: ‘Bully Beef’ (20 - 29 December 1916); ‘Pork and Beans’ (16 January - 5 February 1917); ‘Bits and scraps for an old man’s breakfast’ (July 1917)’; ‘The Battle of Ypres’ (9 July - August 1917). Includes opening entry - ‘My dear Father, When I posted my letter to you this morning it occurred to me that perhaps if I kept a kind of diary for the next couple of weeks it might interest you and others, even if I had nothing of very great interest to relate (31 March 1916).

A file of letters addressed to Fr Matthew Russell SJ, four are written by Edith E. Cooper, one is written by Ruth H.M. Bradley and two are written by Michael Field, 1 The Paragon, Richmond, Surrey, England. A note attached to these letters written by Fr Fergal McGrath SJ (former Irish Province Archivist, 7 May 1981) points out that Michael Field was more than likely the pen name of Edith Cooper and Ruth Bradley who collaborated in their writing. This opinion would appear to be borne out by the fact that of the two letters from Michael Field to Fr Russell one appears to be in the handwriting of Ruth Bradley (22 June, 2pp) and the other in the handwriting of Edith Cooper (19 September 1908, 3pp).
