Doubts that the plans for a residence in Galway will come to fruition. Refers to the foundation of a College for Foreign Missions in Dublin, and announces the death of Fr Kearney. Asks if his correspondent might be disposed to go to Colombia to educate and carry out missionary work, as the population of Bogotà wish European Jesuits to do. Also refers to the political situation in Ireland.

Letters, telegrams, memoranda and notes relating to Belgian refugees in Ireland. Irish Fr Provincial Thomas V. Nolan SJ was a member of the Distribution Committee ‘appointed by the Local Government Board to look after the welfare and distribution of the Belgian Refugees arriving in Dublin’. Most of the letters comprise offers to house refugees or concern schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually. Includes:
– letter from Dr Bernard Coyne, Bishop of Elphin (1913-1926) to Lady Moloney seeking her assistance in the securement of a disused barracks in order to provide shelter for Belgian refugee families (21 Oct. 1914, 1p.);
– bills from drapers and household stores for items purchased for the refugees;
– letters relating to troubles between Protestants and the Catholic refugees in Portadown;
– letters to Fr Nolan from refugees and members of the Belgian Refugees Committee;
– lists of names and locations of refugees in Ireland and names and addresses of people who housed refugees.

On 17 October 1914, the Father Provincial of the Irish Province of the Society of Jesus, Thomas V. Nolan, received a letter from the Local Government Board to go down to the North Wall at 7.30am on the 18th and meet the 100 Belgian refugees ‘and one hundred each of the following days’. This was due to ‘a few of your Order, who speak Flemish’. Subsequently, the Irish Provincial became a member of the Distribution Committee which looked after the welfare and distribution of refugees arriving in Ireland. The Irish Jesuits received offers to house the refugees and organised schemes to aid them, both physically and spiritually.

Irish Fr Provincial opposes both proposals.

Letter from Fr Boursaud, Secretary to the Fr General, to Fr Tuite. Reports that the Fr General is very pleased to hear of the ‘good disposition shown by F. Clery’, and thanks Fr Tuite for sending him the ‘Australian paper’, which gave news of the work of the mission in Australia, including a reference to St Ignatius’ College. Sends the greetings of Fr Porter, who asks Fr Tuite to look in the archives for an instruction from the Fr General around 1878, which modified the ordination of Fr Roothaan on the Minervale.

While various studios, both in Ireland and elsewhere, were responsible for the images, the most frequent photographer was A. Lesage, ‘Photographer to the Catholic Hierarchy’, 40 Lower Sackville Street, Dublin. As well as studio portraits, the album contains a number of deathbed scenes and mass cards (PC/4/ 8, 10, 12). Two more informal photographs from Sydney were adhered to the albums front flyleaf and back cover (PC/4/1, PC/4/52).
This collection derives from an album of portraits of members of the Society of Jesus in the period 1853-1910.

Refers to his departure for America at the end of the following month, and states his intention of going to Anvers in the meantime. Asks his addressee to tell the Rector at Milltown Park that the Procurator of the Belgian Province in Brussels has credited him (de Smet) with the £8 stg, with which he had been entrusted. Refers also to the necessary expenses to be incurred for the American candidates.

Letter from Henry Lynch SJ, a scholastic in Louvain, to Irish Fr Provincial Thomas Brown SJ. Writes in reply to Fr Brown[e]’s query in relation to the distribution in the Irish Province of Holy Communion to lay brothers, novices and servers. Encloses extracts from works to which Fr Brown is directed by Fr Corluy (included). Reports on the Irish in Louvain, who ‘are well & very happy.’ Asserts that Ireland is soon to have ‘a Government of Bashibazooks’. Asks Fr Browne to pray for him that he may receive the sacrament of priesthood the following year.
